It's true that many times people come to your blog specifically for the carnival. That's why you'll have a spike in traffic. However, as you offer the carnival regularly, you'll likely find that your subscribership slowly increases as well and people begin to visit more often--especially if your content is compelling outside of the carnival.
It's also true that if the carnival is very large, it's hard to wade through all the links and find good information. I'll cover a few tips on getting around this in Thursday's article on using the Linky widgets.
